“The leading year-long development program for Central and Eastern Europe’s new film talents.”
General Project Development Methodology
The 9 selected projects go through an intensive 4-module program, spanning over a year, that consists of 2 residential and 2 online workshops, a project showcase and a follow-up session.
During both residential and online workshops, the participants focus on script and project development while also being able to gain deeper knowledge about other aspects of the industry.
The creative teams work in small groups under the guidance of internationally renowned and experienced script consultant tutors. Most of the selected projects are in the early stage of development either with a treatment or an early draft of the script, therefore Workshop 1 focuses mainly on creative development and structural dramaturgy, and also touches upon the issues of financing strategies and market presentation.
Online Workshop 2 serves as a platform to further advance the scripts and financing strategies.
Workshop 3 includes a three-day intensive training where participants work on their scripts, while producers also focus on enhancing their financing strategies and budgets. The workshop also addresses the crucial matters connected to presentation skills and promotion. This workshop is immediately followed by the Works in development – Feature Launch project showcase at the Karlovy Vary IFF, where all 9 selected projects are presented to an audience of industry decision makers, including funders, sales agents, producers and festival programmers.
During online Workshop 4, participants should finalize the work on their scripts or treatments, while being introduced also to marketing and distribution strategies, and company development training for producers.
To close the cycle of the one-year program, Trieste Film Festival and When East Meets West co-production forum invite all 2022 selected producers to Trieste to attend both events, and, moreover, enhance their entrepreneurial skills during the follow-up Company Time workshop focused on company development and conducted in co-operation with EAVE.
All workshops consist of group work, plenary sessions, inspiring master-classes and case studies which offer a deeper understanding of the creative aspects involved in the work, as well as insights into financing, sales, festival and distribution strategies. There are also one-to-one meetings with guest tutors and international experts from different areas of the audiovisual industry to help the participants to further develop their projects.
“Having well-trained script consultants is helpful to remind the writers of certain elements of craft that they may forget in the process of writing.”

General Script Consultancy Training Methodology
The development process the Feature Launch projects go through is used as a platform to train the attending script consultant trainees, who are being educated for their future careers as professional script consultants.
A special preparatory workshop exclusively for the script consultant trainees is organized prior to the start of the program. Its aim is to get acquainted with their mentor, the projects and gain the fundamentals of script consultancy.
The script consultant trainees are guided by both their trainee mentor who supervises their entire learning process, and Feature Launch group leaders, who help them understand the different approaches and strategies they use while developing feature film projects. The trainees attend all residential and online workshops and the project showcase along with the Feature Launch participants. Each trainee is assigned to a group of projects and works closely with the script consultant tutor and the participants on the development of their scripts. In addition, the trainees regularly meet their trainee mentor and review their learning progress.
Through this process, the trainees get acquainted with the script and development aspects of developing a film project, enhance their communication skills in the creative process and most importantly, learn how to give constructive feedback to the creative teams to help them move forward with their development. They witness the different stages of development of the projects up through the final presentation at the Karlovy Vary IFF. Simultaneously, the trainees also receive training in presentation skills and introduce themselves during the pitching forum at KVIFF.
To apply for the workshop, please create an account on the MIDPOINT Visitor Page and follow the instructions within the submission form.
The instructions will contain detailed regulations and further information on the requested materials.

Once selected, how much time should I allocate to the training?
Quite honestly – a lot. Feature Launch is an intensive training, and apart from the assignments and work done during all residential and online workshops, it operates with a system of tasks and deadlines in between these modules. So clear that calendar out a bit.
I'm not European, can I apply?
Feature Launch is specifically designed for European writers, as we'd like to address the demand for training coming particularly from this territory. The main focus is put on the region of Central and Eastern Europe. However, projects with a strong co-production potential or already attached partners/team members from this region can be accepted as well. In case you are still not sure about your eligibility, please contact the program coordinator Sona Morgenthalova.
Can I send you the application materials via e-mail?
We are happy you would like to apply, but we accept only those applications submitted through our Visitor Page. Firstly, that way you can be sure your e-mail doesn't end up in junk, and secondly, all submitted materials are distributed to the selection committee via the Visitor Page (please see the 'Application' section).
Can I apply with an animation or documentary film project?
Sadly, Feature Launch does not work with animation or documentary projects, as these require a different set of skills and addresses a different market.
My English no good. Me can apply?
Sadly, no. As the entire training runs in English, and during the working days you'll be asked to write directly in English, we require an intermediate level of these language skills. This simply means: your grammar doesn't have to be perfect, but you need to talk/write fluently and have the vocabulary to do so.
Can I apply without a writer OR director OR producer in the team?
You can't. All these creative roles have to be present in your team. One person could represent more than one role (writer/director OR director/producer, etc.), or there could be two people representing one role (2x writer OR 2x producer, etc.). In any case, the team must consist of 2-3 people.
Does MIDPOINT Institute offer scholarships?
It does. However, these cannot be allocated to all participants, and their granting therefore considers various criteria. We HIGHLY recommend applying to a local supporting organization (national or local funds, ministries of culture or education, professional associations, etc.) at the same time you're applying to MIDPOINT Feature Launch. You can always withdraw your application if not selected, but as the processing time of this support can be rather long, it might be quite late to do this once we confirm you're in.
KVIFF & MIDPOINT Development Award
A joint financial award of MIDPOINT and the Karlovy Vary IFF of 10.000 EUR for the best project of the Feature Launch 2020 program underlines the aim of the program itself – help emerging talents from Central and Eastern Europe to develop their film projects.
