“The ideal program to explore, discover and nurture the future generation of European filmmakers.”
The creative teams work in a small group under the guidance of an internationally renowned and experienced script consultant tutor.
The program starts with an Online Kickoff whose aim is to get acquainted with the tutors, fellow participants, the implemented methodology, to start the work on the scripts and set up the dynamics within the participants and tutors.
Most of the selected projects usually are in the early stage of development either with a treatment or an early draft of the script, therefore Workshop 1 is mainly focused on creative development and structural dramaturgy. During the first workshop, the participants also start working on their strategies together with the producer tutor. Workshop 2 serves as a platform to further advance the scripts, while it also incorporates distribution strategies into the development process and addresses the important matters connected to presentation skills and promotion. The whole program concludes with the project showcase within the When East Meets West Co-production Forum.
All three workshops consist of group work, plenary sessions, inspiring master classes and case studies which offer a deeper understanding of the creative aspects involved in the work, as well as insights into financing, sales, festival and distribution strategies.
There are also one-to-one meetings with guest tutors and international experts from different areas of the audiovisual industry to help the participants further develop their projects.
Tailor-made online consultations follow every workshop according to the need of each project.
To apply for the workshop, please create an account on the MIDPOINT Institute Visitor Page and follow the instructions within the submission form.

I'm not European, can I apply?
Yes, the MIDPOINT Shorts program is accepting filmmakers from all over the world, with the regional focus being put on the Central and Eastern Europe.
Can I apply without a writer OR director OR producer in the team?
You can't. All these creative roles have to be present in your team. One person could represent more than one role (writer/director OR director/producer, etc.), or there could be two people representing one role (2x writer OR 2x producer, etc.). In any case, the team must consist of 2-3 people.
Do we have to have some financing in place while applying for the workshop?
You don’t, however, you’ll need a financing plan when completing the application.
Can I apply with an animation or documentary short film project?
Sadly, this program does not work with animation or documentary projects, its focus are live-action fiction short film projects. However, live-action shorts with animation elements could be considered for the selection.
Are there any time requirements regarding the minimum or maximum length of the short film?
The recommended length is approximately 7-25 minutes.
My English no good. Me can apply?
Sadly, no. As the entire training runs in English, and during the working days you'll be asked to write directly in English, we require an intermediate level of these language skills. This simply means: your grammar doesn't have to be perfect, but you need to talk/write fluently and have the vocabulary to do so.
