Pavel Marek was born in 1963 in India, in Calcutta. He spent part of his childhood with his parents in the U.S.A. Since 1970 he has been living in Prague. In 1988 he graduated from the Faculty of Computer Engineering, Technical University, Prague. From 1992 to 1993 he studied at the National Film and Television School in the UK. In 1998 he completed his studies at the Department of Directing at FAMU. While a student at the Technical University he shot several short films with his friends under the heading of "Bulsitfilm, Independent Film Association" in which he cooperated primarily with the late cinematographer Roman Vcelak. The films, inspired by dreams and unconscious experiences aroused the considerable interest of film experts and put him in the circle of surrealistic filmmakers. He contributed to this also as an actor in two films of the surrealist director Jan Svankmajer. In 1998 his full-length film Dead Beetle premiered at the Rotterdam IFF. Later he would concentrate mainly on documentary films. Pavel Marek currently works as a Professor in the Department of Directing at FAMU as well as FAMU International.
