As a filmmaker, Popo Fan’s queer documentary films have made a notable impact in Chinese society since 2009. In 2017 he relocated from Beijing to Berlin, from then he has concentrated on writing and directing scripted shorts. His films are usually inspired by real experience and feature intersectional topics of LGBTQ+, migrants and sex. He is the founder of the Queer University Video Training Camp and has been an organizer of the Beijing Queer Film Festival for more than a decade. Popo participated in Berlinale talents 2017, and was invited to sit on the jury of the Teddy Award of the Berlinale in 2019. He also keeps columns on several Chinese media and occasionally does stand up comedy. Recently, before going to sleep he would take time to view Tik Tok cooking videos, then think about how to make his new film projects delicious and sexy.
