The thirty-seventh kilometre

Participated in: MIDPOINT Intensive CZ 2020

Sonya (17) lives with her father (52), a retired army officer, in a closed military town lost in the Belarusian woods. Her mother (46) got a divorce and moved out to the city with her brother (7) shortly after he was born. The pain of betrayal has brought Sonya closer to her father and made her feel responsible for him while tolerating his harsh and cold personality. Father doesn't favour her work as an orderly at the town's military hospital and ambitions to obtain medical education in the city. He rather expects Sonya to invest more time and effort in their small family business.

Once, Sonya encounters a young conscript soldier who tries to desert and asks her for help, but thereafter disappears. Video recordings from the phone she finds reveal that he was constantly bullied and beaten. Sonya gets frustrated and paranoid as the feeling of being watched grows. She faces a moral challenge, trusting that the prime objective of her dream profession is to help others in need.
