Solfeggio Lessons
Solfeggio Lessons follows Olena, a widowed solfeggio teacher at an old, rigid music school, and her 16-year-old daughter Yaryna, a gifted pianist who is growing increasingly distant from the musical path chosen for her. After the death of her father, music becomes a point of tension between them: for Olena, it is the only structure that holds her life together, a way to cope with loss and preserve meaning; for Yaryna, it becomes a reminder of grief and a future she no longer wants.
As the final exam approaches, Yaryna resists lessons, discipline, and expectations, searching for a way out of the confined world of school, home, and inherited ambition. Olena, unable to let go, tries to hold on to her daughter’s future as both an act of love and control. Their relationship tightens under pressure, revealing two opposing ways of processing the same loss.
Set against the backdrop of Kyiv in 2015 - a period of profound political and social transformation in Ukraine - the film reflects a wider sense of instability and shifting identity. This external uncertainty echoes inside the private world of the characters, where inherited systems of discipline, tradition, and control begin to fracture.
Solfeggio Lessons explores a closed post-Soviet music school world and a mother-daughter bond suspended between love, grief, and the struggle for independence.
