Growing Up
Five high school friends travel to surprise their “successful” friend abroad for his 30th birthday, only to confront the gap between their dreams of success and reality.
Growing Up is a dramedy about a generation of Croatian millennials raised on the belief that real life happens somewhere else — in Western European cities, in the long-held promise of making it abroad. A group of old high school friends from Zagreb heads to the Austrian ski resort of Tux to visit Šimun (30), convinced he is living the dream.
But Šimun isn't the thriving executive chef they pictured; he’s scraping by as a lowly hotel kitchen porter. Through their reunion, the series examines the Balkan migrant experience, navigating Western ideals, the harsh reality of blue-collar labor, and the struggle for identity.
Beneath the polished veneer of Western Europe lies a hidden world of burnout, class shame, transient living, and the exhausting pressure to keep up appearances. What begins as a nostalgic getaway slowly unravels into the emotional collapse of a generation caught in limbo, no longer rooted in the home they left behind, nor truly belonging to the world they chased.
