OUTLOUD

Country: the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Belgium

Ismail chooses to live OUTLOUD. Instead of setting him free, being seen threatens his safety and belonging and forces an older generation to confront what hiding has cost them.

When a secretly recorded video of 17-year-old Ismail and his boyfriend Yassin making love goes viral, Yassin is identifiable and outed, while Ismail remains unrecognisable. Fatima films them from across the street, where she has long watched Ismail’s bedroom window, imagining they would one day marry. Only she knows the other boy is Ismail. Rather than hide, and against his family’s wishes, Ismail publicly reveals that he is the other boy in the video. As the fallout spreads, Ismail’s older gay uncle, Marouan, confronts his hidden sexuality and a love he never allowed himself to live. As pressure builds around Ismail and Marouan, their families and community become a battleground between protection, control, loyalty and shame. OUTLOUD follows two generations facing the cost of being seen and of remaining hidden.
